Presented by C4 Waterman Holding Period Begins Today; Invitees Announced

(Makaha, HI) - January 15, 2010 --- A record-setting winter of gigantic surf continues in Hawaii, and Quiksilver is proud to announce the third annual Quiksilver Ku Ikaika Challenge, presented by C4 Waterman. This event is an invitational big-wave stand up paddle (SUP) surfing competition that will run on one day between January 15 and February 28, 2010, when wave face heights exceed 15 feet at Makaha Point, on the west shore of Oahu. "Ku Ikaika", a Hawaiian phrase that means stand strong, was derived in reference to the sport of stand up paddle surfing and to upholding a healthy and positive approach to wave riding.

In a similar vein to the recent Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau that ran on December 8, 2009, the Quiksilver Ku Ikaika Challenge is a one-day big-wave invitational that features 30 of the sport's leading experts. The inaugural event was staged on Valentine's Day in 2008, and was won by well-known Hawaiian waterman Aaron Napoleon.

The 2010 list of invitees features a mix of legendary and rising SUP experts that includes defending champion Napoleon, Jamie Mitchell (Australia), Raimana Van Bastolaer (Tahiti), Ibon Amatriain (Euskadi), Robby Naish (Hawaii), and Gerry Lopez (Hawaii).

The Ku Ikaika Challenge will offer a total prize purse of $10,000, with $3,000 going to the winner. The main event will consist of 30 invited surfers plus six trialists. (Invitees listed below.)

The concept for the event was developed by C4 Waterman co-founder Brian Keaulana, who wanted to showcase SUP surfing at the historic venue of Makaha -- home of the very first international surfing event in 1963 -- while also giving back to the local community. It was embraced as a natural fit for Quiksilver, a brand built upon adventure, commitment, endurance and style - key components of SUP surfing and the waterman's lifestyle.

Stand up paddle surfing first surfaced on the shores of Waikiki back in the 1940s and '50s. The original Waikiki Beachboys blended their favorite sports of outrigger canoe paddling and surfing, utilizing a canoe paddle to both paddle and surf while standing. It was an adaptation made for convenience as it afforded the Beachboys a better view of the Waikiki surf lineup where they assisted tourists in learning to surf and took their photos while doing so.

The sport has enjoyed an incredible global rebirth in recent years and has been given a high-energy, modern-day spin: big-wave riding. Utilizing a paddle that is today specifically designed for SUP, surfers maintain an upright position while paddling out to the lineup, paddling into the waves, and then surfing them to shore. The paddle is not only a tool for navigating the lineup, but is also critically employed throughout the surfer's maneuvers on the wave.

The Quiksilver Ku Ikaika Challenge, presented by C4 Waterman, is a big-wave stand up paddle (SUP) surfing invitational staged each winter at Makaha Point, on the West Side of Oahu, Hawaii. "Ku Ikaika", a Hawaiian phrase that means stand strong, was derived in reference to the sport of stand up paddle surfing and to upholding a healthy and positive approach to wave riding. The Quiksilver Ku Ikaika Challenge features a selection of legendary and rising SUP exponents from around the world. Founded in 2008, the Ku Ikaika was the world's first big-wave SUP contest. A one-day-only event that runs when waves on the point reach a minimum of 15 feet, the Ku Ikaika fittingly takes place at Makaha - the birthplace of professional surfing.

"O Peru vai sediar pela primeira vez uma etapa do Circuito Mundial de Longboard da ASP, com nível máximo 6 estrelas abrindo o ASP Longboard Qualifying Series 2010. O Huanchaco Longboard Pro Peru 2010 será realizado nos dias 27 a 30 de janeiro na praia El Elio do balneário peruano, com organização da Olas Norte e da Prefeitura Municipal de Huanchaco. A vitória vale pontuação máxima para três rankings, o mundial ASP LQS, o sul-americano profissional da ASP South America e o latino-americano da ALAS – Associação Latino Americana de Surf.

Para as grandes estrelas dos pranchões no mundo, com participação maciça dos brasileiros, a prefeitura de Huanchado programou diversas atividades paralelas com suas culturais locais, como a “Aterrissagem de Takaynamo” e a “Chegada dos Deuses Moche” (Arribo Takaynamo y la Llegada de los Dioses Moche).

No Huanchado Longboard Pro 2010, o Peru estará representado pelo surfista local Piccolo Clemente, que tem em seu currículo o título de Campeão Peruano de Longboard, Tamil Martino e Juan José Corzo, entre outros. Será distribuído um total de U$ 30.000 em prêmios e o evento vale pontuação máxima principalmente no ranking qualificatório para o grupo que disputa o título mundial da temporada no ASP World Longboard Tour 2010.

“Huanchaco foi escolhida como palco deste grande evento mundial pela qualidade das suas praias, seus talentosos surfistas e também pela sua cultura sempre com bastante destaque na história do surf peruano, com seu milenar “Caballito de Totora”, considerado como a primeira forma criada para surfar as ondas do Peru”, contou Richard Navarrete, organizador do evento.

Este evento promete trazer os melhores Longboarders do mundo, de países como Estados Unidos, Hawaii, França, Austrália, Espanha e da América do Sul em geral, principalmente do Brasil, que participará com suas principais estrelas do cenário internacional, na busca pelos pontos e premiação oferecidos em Huanchaco para almejarem o título mundial da categoria.

A organização do evento conta com o apoio da Prefeitura Municipal de Huanchaco, do Instituto Peruano de Esportes, do Governo Regional de La Libertad, da PROMPERU, da Polícia Nacional, da Marinha de Guerra do Peru, entre outras instituições nacionais."

É com gosto que anuncio que, em colaboração com o Surfing Clube de Portugal e com a Associação Portuguesa de Tow in Surf e Salvamento Aquático, organizo curso de Tow In Surf para todos os interessados em surf apoiado por mota de água.

Esta nova vertente do Surf requer capacidades para enfrentar situações de alta tensão, um boa condição física e emocional, conhecimentos do mar e das condições meteorológicas previsíveis, adaptação a novos equipamentos e capacidades para resgatar o parceiro.

Este curso é por isso, uma óptima oportunidade para abraçar a modalidade em segurança e na posse de uma importante dose de conhecimentos básicos e avançados.

O curso será dividido em três módulos, Teórico, Prático e Prática de Mar, e terá lugar na Sede do Surfing Clube de Portugal em S. Pedro do Estoril, nos próximos dias 20 e 21 de Fevereiro.

Hobie Signs 3x Longboard World Champion Colin McPhillips to its Team

San Juan Capistrano, CA –- Hobie is proud to announce the signing of 3 time World Longboard Champion Colin McPhillips as the newest addition to its team of premier surfers and watermen. Colin will be representing Hobie Polarized sunglasses, Hobie Surfboards and Hobie Stand Up Paddleboards.

Colin is currently working with Hobie shaper Mark Johnson on 3 signature high performance Stand Up Paddle surf models, and 3 signature Hobie Surfboard models shaped by legendary Hobie shaper Terry Martin.
